United Stockholms of America
Between 1850 – 1930 approximately 1.3 million Swedes immigrated to America. Leaving Sweden in great despair and religious prosecution the millions of families starting a new life in The New World shaped the country for ever. All around U.S. are there traces of Scandinavian decent with as many as eight Stockholm’s around the country. From Northeast in Maine, New York and New Jersey to Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa in the Midwest and Texas which was the last Stockholm to be Founded.
Photographer Charlie Bennet travelled to these eight rural places and documented the remains of Swedish heritage. The photos can be seen below and in the book United Stockholms of America – The Swedes Who Stayed.
